about

The Legend of People Soup

Part 1: The Discovery
It was the year of Our Lord 2008 AD.
Two Sheffield musicians, known to some as I Monster, were traipsing round a car boot sale in darkest Derbyshire on a dank and dreary Sunday morning. Hidden among boxes of rusting royal biscuit tins and mildewed, well thumbed editions of Health and Efficiency, they spied a pair of silver magnetic tape reels that were attached to a dusty, yet beautiful, old Brenell tape machine. Its fascia, beneath the reels, was finished in Hammerite bronze and its four sides were clad in thick Indian teak. A fine example of over engineered 1960s British technology.
Being avid collectors of old tat and any object which produces sound, they excitedly offered the proprietor of the automotive junk emporium the handsome sum of ten English pounds for his recording device. The gay fellow assured them that the recorder was functional and accepted the offer without hesitation.
Upon handing over the machine he pointed down to a large cardboard box and exclaimed "ere, you might as well have these as well, they're of no use to me". Inside the box lay a disorderly stack of dozens of reel to reel tapes in a variety of cases and covers.

Part 2: The Treasure
Back at I Monster HQ, Brenell was cleaned up and dusted down and made ready for a test run.
From the box of tapes a reel simply labelled “THE GIRLS” was randomly selected, mounted on to the machine and the thin brown strip of tape was threaded over the heads and on to the take up reel.
The play button was pressed. After 30 seconds of lovely hiss, distant chattering and voices began to quietly leak from the speakers. And then……………chanting!…………singing!!…………joyous squawking girls!!!! The sound of voices from another time and place, captured many years ago and now magically released, through the wonder of ancient analogue technology, into our world.

Part 3: The Graft
The I Monster fellows naturally interpreted this rare find as a gift from the heavens. And so they set to work, cleaning and polishing, cutting and chopping, stretching and dressing the girls until they were transformed……… into PEOPLE SOUP.
